If you work with complex systems (software, manufacturing, people, etc.), you know that agility increases productivity, quality, morale, and much more. Agility is a Good Thing.
That said, many teams and organizations have found success with predictive project management practices, and my hope is that sharing this model and visualization of how agility reduces risk may provide a useful lens for evaluating whether you need to invest in agility in your organization.[Read more…]
Our goal for the Ondema Workspace is to make it easy for all users within a company to manage, update and view real-time schedule information for their entire organization. One of the ways we do this is by immediately saving nearly every action* a user takes and reflecting those changes instantly on every screen within the Workspace.
Autosave is a time- and sanity-saver that allows users to focus on getting their work done without wondering if their data is safe and saved.[Read more…]
We used a Material-UI component in an update we made today: a small menu to allow users to quickly change the priority of an item:[Read more…]
The first time I saw Ondema’s user interface, I instantly recognized the card paradigm as a powerful visualization of tasks. It’s fairly common in many different applications, so it is a known design pattern that requires little work for the user to understand.[Read more…]
One of the continuing lessons of my personal and professional life has been learning every day a bit more about the intent/effect gap.
There’s what I think I’m saying, and there’s what my child hears. Two very different things.
There’s what I think I told the software to do, and there’s the code I wrote. Also two very different things![Read more…]
In late March there were reports of unemployment web sites being overloaded by demand and becoming unresponsive. This sort of scaling challenge will become less common in the age of serverless, but serverless is still new enough that there is value in a post about how serverless changes how we think about delivering applications. Note: this is a somewhat technical post geared for a technical audience that is familiar with CDNs, APIs, databases, etc.[Read more…]

Part memoir, part unsolicited advice. Read at your own risk…
I’ve worked from home more often than not for 25 years. As a writer (mostly of software) who craves and sometimes requires a minimum of interruptions, I have often preferred the home office to the work office.
Even so, working from home is often difficult, and in a time when many of us are exploring the home office for the first time under arduous circumstances, I thought I’d write a post to confirm that yes, working form home can be very tough, share some solutions that have worked for me, and try to make the case that working from home can require developing a complex set of new skills that can take months and years to master.[Read more…]
What you don’t need: another company sending a meaningless COVID-19 response email.
What you might need: a company taking action on behalf of its customers.
We’re intent on helping you continue to execute during this difficult time. Here’s a small sample of some of the things we’re doing:
- Through 2020, Partner accounts* are now free for new and existing customers. These accounts are a great way to loop in individuals and businesses in your ecosystem to seamlessly share information and collaborate. This is especially helpful when face-to-face interaction or travel isn’t an option.
- We are hard at work building the features you asked for: creating duplicate items to limit manual data entry, CSV import for batch uploading, resource utilization visuals to increase efficiencies, and more.
- All customers now have access to unlimited free training sessions with an Ondema technical representative, conducted via Zoom.
